Rainier Jr/Sr High School sits on a 260-acre campus which includes the district office, our elementary school, and a charter school which provide several alternative options for students to complete graduation requirements. Rainier JR/SR High School has approximately 480 students enrolled in grades 7-12, including six foreign exchange students. We have a variety of programs that support our special needs population, especially in their preparation for transition and post-high school opportunities.
Our staff includes seventeen full- time teachers, three part- time teachers, three special education teachers, two half time counselors, three secretaries, eight instructional assistants, a half time Dean of Students, and two principals. Staff participates in weekly professional development on Wednesday mornings as students are on a 1- hour late start schedule. This weekly professional development time is fostering a collaborative and professional culture that teachers believe and our data indicates is improving teaching and learning. We are in our first year of implementing a proficiency- based grading system that we believe will give us a better understanding of what our students know and can do based on the Common Core State Standards.
In addition to our core classes we offer a variety of elective classes to support our students’ academic progress. Those electives include: art, strength training, agriculture, forestry, wood shop, Spanish, leadership, ceramics, photography, yearbook, choir, band, accounting, consumer finance, physical education, computer applications. Students also participate in AP classes, Honors classes, and college-credit courses, all of which prepare our students to be successful in college. We have added support classes for our students that are struggling in Math and English Language Arts in an effort to increase academic growth.
